Louisiana’s auto-glass claim guide

For motor-vehicle-glass work to be paid under a first-party policy, Louisiana Act 327 says a glass repair shop must not contract for the work until a first-party claim has been made and the shop has received a claim or referral number for that claim.

When a motor vehicle has an advanced driver assistance system, Louisiana Act 327 requires written notice about whether manufacturer-recommended calibration is needed, whether the glass shop intends to perform it to the manufacturer’s specifications, and a dealer or qualified-specialist referral if the shop cannot or does not intend to do so.

After calibrating or recalibrating an advanced driver assistance system, Louisiana Act 327 requires written notice stating whether the work was successful according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and whether a dealer or qualified specialist is needed if it was not successful.

Louisiana Act 327 requires a written good-faith estimate of anticipated fees and costs before glass repair or replacement, and an itemized invoice and receipt when payment is made for completed work.

Louisiana Act 327 permits an insurer or producer to recommend a motor-vehicle-glass repair shop or maintain a repair-shop network, but a person making a first-party glass claim may not be required to use a particular glass shop or recalibration facility to receive claim payments or other policy benefits.

After automotive glass replacement, whether an ADAS recalibration or calibration is required is determined by the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure for the specific vehicle and operation; it is not a blanket rule for every windshield replacement.
